Historical Accuracy - Full Metal Jacket

For my second critical response to a movie’s historical accuracy, I chose “The Full Metal Jacket”. The movie focuses on army boot camp and the Vietnamese war.  First and foremost, I would like to say that this movie is not meant to be historically or factually  correct, but is still based on memories. The movie is based on a novel “The Short Timers” by Gustav Hasford or as we know him, the Joker. He was a Marine correspondent in the forgotten war. The movie has been complimented for the first half of it and how accurate the boot camp was. The Marines who trained at PArris ISland did say that they were treated similarly and even though it might be hard to believe, received absurd punishments as well. Some sources say that in real life the situation was worse. Gunnery Sgt. Hartman, the sergeant who insults the platoons in a very creative way, was actually a real sergeant. The actor was originally hired as a consultant on scene, but caught the eye of the director and was given the role.

The Full Metal Jacket

From 1950s to the mid 70s, the most important idea in the US was to fight communism. It all started with the Iron Curtain a political, ideological barrier created by the Soviet Union to distance themselves from the western countries.  In a congess speech in 1947, later known as the Truman Doctrine , Truman promised military and economical aid for Turkey and Greece due to them being threatened by the Soviet Union. It was important to protect  all possible countries to protect the West from communism. In 1957 eisenhowen doctriine offered protection to Middle-Eastern countries. At the end of World War II, Soviet started to build nuclear weapons. The only solution to protect USA from communism was to answer with the same (Mutual Assured Destruction). It was called the  Arms Race. McCarthy Era: A very anti - communism time in the US. HUAC trying to get communism out of Hollywood and McCarthy was actively fighting against the inflitration in 1940s - 50s. Left wing was seen as a risk to the

The Help

In 1950s - 1960s the most important idea in the USA was The Civil Rights Movement . The idea of equal rights for black Americans, one of the biggest changes was the right to vote. The changes started with The Brown vs Topeka case on May 17th 1954. It took 4 different cases for it to be decided that racial segregation in schools in unconstitutionalised. It was proven by Little Rock Nine , 9 black volunteer students sent to an all-white highschool. Their struggles started when they were not allowed to enter the building and had to sit at the back of the class to ensure their safety. One of the most known figures of civil rights movemnts was Rosa Parks , who in 1955 refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white person. She did get arrested, but her acts inspired many people, whoboycotted the buses, leading to the dissapearance of racial segregation on a bus.  racial segregation was very common. There were colored pools, parks, bathrooms, etc. Black codes that said how and where previo

The Immigrant

In the 19th century there were a couple important events:      1) In 1848 the California Gold Rush  began with founding over 2 billion dollars worth of gold. There had been two previous rushes in Georgia and Carolina.       2) During 1871 - 1900 the government worked on constructing and improving new railroads. Pacific Railway Act focused specifically on promoting the construction of railroads. The most well known road was Union Pacific Railroad . Industrialisation In 1807 the Ambargo Act prohibited US trade with France and UK, being bad for US economy especially after recovering from a war. US started to use raw materials and in order to cover the work load, immigrants came to the cities to work in the factories resulting in urbanisation. The ones getting the most damage from the economical issues were the consumers. Formation of Trust  did not help the situation either. The idea was to keep the prices for consumers as high as possible, but still barely affordable. That meant it was e

Historical Accuracy - Glory

For my critical response to the historical accuracy for the movies I chose “Glory”. The movie was about the first ever African - American regiment. Culminating with a battle at the Fort with many casualties.  The movie was not fully accurate, though it was still based on real-life events. The colonel Robert Gould Shaw really did exist and the movie relies strongly on his letters to home. Many other sources state that in real life Shaw was much more ambiguous and passionate. Another mistake made was not showing the colonel’s recruitment. In “Glory” he receives a letter at a fancier party and the next scene shows him at the colonel’s position. In reality Robert was with his regiment when he received the letter and he was struggling to make a decision. At first he even rejected the job, later changing his mind.  However, the scene in which Shaw refuses lower pay if his soldier does not want it is correct. So is the scene in which Robert is instructed to have the village burned down by h
