The Help
In 1950s - 1960s the most important idea in the USA was The Civil Rights Movement. The idea of equal rights for black Americans, one of the biggest changes was the right to vote.
The changes started with The Brown vs Topeka case on May 17th 1954. It took 4 different cases for it to be decided that racial segregation in schools in unconstitutionalised. It was proven by Little Rock Nine, 9 black volunteer students sent to an all-white highschool. Their struggles started when they were not allowed to enter the building and had to sit at the back of the class to ensure their safety.
One of the most known figures of civil rights movemnts was Rosa Parks, who in 1955 refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white person. She did get arrested, but her acts inspired many people, whoboycotted the buses, leading to the dissapearance of racial segregation on a bus.
racial segregation was very common. There were colored pools, parks, bathrooms, etc. Black codes that said how and where previously enslaved people could work. KKK - a private club for veterans terrorised black people to make sure those codes were followed. In 1964 Johnson illegalised racial segregation.
The organisation fighting for this is NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) which was founded in 1909 and is still working today working toward equality.
In March there was a March on Washington to pass the Civil Laws Act which prohibited discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, etc. Before the protest Knenedy tried talking them out of it. It was signed by Lyndon B. Johnson, unfortunately with huge opposition form the public. It was passed due to the mess around J. F. Kennedy assasination.
"I have a dream" are one of the most known words. Martin Luther King called for civil rights and the end of racism, winning a Nobel Peace Price in 1964.
Another step towards equality was the Loving vs Virginia Case that led to legalisation of black and white marriage, later helping to legalise gay marriage. The case was fought for 25 years after a local sheriff arrested the Lovings for marrying.
A year after it all, in 1965 Lee Johnson signed The Voting Act and banned the literacy test, that black people had to take to prove their legitimacy. In 1968 an organisation against police bruatlity, black nationalism and socialism was formed. Black Panther Party had 2000 members, but were shut down due to being against the USA.
Due to the inspiration gained from the civil rights are, today "Black Power" is a slogan for a movement against racism. The motivation for athor minorities (LGBTQ+) has been huge and it has allowed them to speak up about discrimination and get equal rights.
