The Immigrant

In the 19th century there were a couple important events:      1) In 1848 the California Gold Rush  began with founding over 2 billion dollars worth of gold. There had been two previous rushes in Georgia and Carolina.       2) During 1871 - 1900 the government worked on constructing and improving new railroads. Pacific Railway Act focused specifically on promoting the construction of railroads. The most well known road was Union Pacific Railroad . Industrialisation In 1807 the Ambargo Act prohibited US trade with France and UK, being bad for US economy especially after recovering from a war. US started to use raw materials and in order to cover the work load, immigrants came to the cities to work in the factories resulting in urbanisation. The ones getting the most damage from the economical issues were the consumers. Formation of Trust  did not help the situation either. The idea was to keep the prices for consumers as high as possible, but ...

Historical Accuracy - Glory

For my critical response to the historical accuracy for the movies I chose “Glory”. The movie was about the first ever African - American regiment. Culminating with a battle at the Fort with many casualties.  The movie was not fully accurate, though it was still based on real-life events. The colonel Robert Gould Shaw really did exist and the movie relies strongly on his letters to home. Many other sources state that in real life Shaw was much more ambiguous and passionate. Another mistake made was not showing the colonel’s recruitment. In “Glory” he receives a letter at a fancier party and the next scene shows him at the colonel’s position. In reality Robert was with his regiment when he received the letter and he was struggling to make a decision. At first he even rejected the job, later changing his mind.  However, the scene in which Shaw refuses lower pay if his soldier does not want it is correct. So is the scene in which Robert is instructed to have the village bu...

The Glory

The main ideas of the Cicil War era were the idea of equality and slavery. It is important to understand the two sides in the war. South - America The majority of their economy were large plantations Relyd on slavery  North - America It had had rapid industrialisation Did not rely on slavery Had growing numbers of movements for abolition of slavery William Wilberforce and Thomas Clarkson lead one of those movements in which they claimed that slavery is immoral. Their mission was to prohibit importation of enslaved Africans and they were mainly focusing on areas such as the Deep South, the West Indies, South America. In 1818 Missouri applied to be an independent state (used to be a part of Louisiana). The South wanted Missouri to be a slave state, the North was hoping for a  free state. The compromise was for Missouri to be a slave state and another new state, Maine, to be a free state. That way the number was equal - 11 and 11. Another part of teh compromise was a sla...

The Patriot

In the US the number of colonies has grown and it has reached 13. There have been rising tensions between the colonies and Great Britain. The main reason being taxation. Taxes The Sugar Tax 1764- duties on molasses and imported sugar Stamp Act- Necessary stamps on legal documents The Stamp Act raised a lot of hatred amongst colonists, culminating with the Boston Massacre (5.03.1770). It was an argument between a soldier and a civilian that resulted in soldiers firing into crowds and killing 3 people. Due to the tensions people dressed up as Indians, raided a ship carrying tea and threw 342 chests of tea into the ocean. Causing the Boston Tea Party of 1773. As A result of conflicts between colonists and Great Britain, the 13 colonies started pursuing independence. A committee of 5 was founded by the Congress to articulate the need for independence. Thomas Jefferson was chosen to write The Declaration of Independence. The document was approved on 04.07.1776 and signed by 56 Foundi...

The Pilgrim's journey

This time period is all about the arrival and origin of Native Americans. It is agreed that they arrived around 15 000 years ago and that is about everything scientists have agreed on. There are three main theories or ideas about how they arrived- through the Pacific Maritime route, Atlantic Maritime route or Bering Strait theory. Different cultures: Clovis - Paleo - Indian culture (15 000 - 3 500 BCE). Lifestyle consisted mainly of hunting mammals. They lived in scattered bands. Ancestral Pueblo and Mississippian culture tribes all lived in the States during the Coles Creek/ Mississippi time period (550-1700 CE). They were known as basket weavers and known for shell clay pottery, which involved a lot of symbolism. Civilisation in South- America Civilisation in South - America consisted of four tribes over the years 1800 BCE - 1572 CE. These were Mayans, Toltec, Aztecs, Incas. They already  had economical and societal structures and centralised languages.  Different tribes and...
