The Patriot

In the US the number of colonies has grown and it has reached 13. There have been rising tensions between the colonies and Great Britain. The main reason being taxation.

Taxes

  1. The Sugar Tax 1764- duties on molasses and imported sugar

  2. Stamp Act- Necessary stamps on legal documents

The Stamp Act raised a lot of hatred amongst colonists, culminating with the Boston Massacre (5.03.1770). It was an argument between a soldier and a civilian that resulted in soldiers firing into crowds and killing 3 people.

Due to the tensions people dressed up as Indians, raided a ship carrying tea and threw 342 chests of tea into the ocean. Causing the Boston Tea Party of 1773.

As A result of conflicts between colonists and Great Britain, the 13 colonies started pursuing independence. A committee of 5 was founded by the Congress to articulate the need for independence. Thomas Jefferson was chosen to write The Declaration of Independence. The document was approved on 04.07.1776 and signed by 56 Founding Fathers. Independence was fought for in The Revolutionary War  for 7 years, ending with the victory of America.

As the USA was now an independent country there was a need for a government. The Constitutional Convention took place in 1787 to determine how the country would be governed. The result was Connecticut Compromise (equal representation of states in revenues and ⅗ slave compromise). The head of Constitutional Convention was George Washington (later the first president of the US)

In order for the government to work, Articles of Confederation were established. Giving the states a lot of autonomy. Unfortunately the issues of enforcing the agreements started to tear the country apart and it was understood that there was a need for a centralised government.

Due to the fear of centralisation caused by Great Britain forcing rules upon America, they wrote the US Constitution, US’ supreme law that separated power (judicial, executive, legislative) and established a new government. Referring to the first 10 amendments, The Bill of Rights, which protected civil rights of an individual (freedom of speech, right to bear arms, etc).
